The Port Arthur Historic Site has resumed normal operations and is open for visitors.
The Historic Site has been closed since bushfires near Forcett spread south on Friday 4 January, closing the Arthur Highway, the only road access to the Tasman Peninsula.
While there has been significant fire damage along the route of the Arthur Highway, damage on the Tasman Peninsula itself has been restricted to the northern end. The southern area around Port Arthur has not suffered any damage.
Those intending to travel to the Peninsula should check for updated advice from the Tasmania Fire Service (www.fire.tas.gov.au) and Tasmania Police (www.police.tas.gov.au) and follow the instructions of authorised emergency personnel. It would also be a good idea to tune in to ABC 936 Hobart (local ABC Radio) for updates as you travel.
Please continue to check this page for updates.
